Heeding the Call

Recently, I came across an article with maybe the most impressive by-line I’ve ever seen:

By: U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral (VADM) Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A.

The article is entitled Raise. Your. Voice., and it’s a call to action. Murthy writes:

We cannot begin to address the challenges to achieving emotional well-being and good mental health until we get rid of the unacceptable stigma – be they cultural, religious or social – associated with mental illness and addiction.

The stigma is real. And, in my own small way, day by day, I am heeding Murthy’s call. Won’t you, too?

  1. The more we talk about mental illness just as any other medical issue, the better we can understand it. We should treat these disorders no differently than if someone had cancer or diabetes.
